Jules Verne's A Journey to the Center of the Earth is a classic science fiction tale from 1864. The story is related in a diary form by the young nephew, apprenticed to his famous scientist uncle. Based on fragments of writings, hundreds of years old, the pair embark on a mission to reach the center of the earth by way of an extinct volcano in Iceland. They pick up a guide who is both implacable as well as insistent on his weekly wage. They experience multiple adventures, finding ancient creatures and plant life as well as an subterranean ocean. Seemingly wholly unprepared, they scramble to find food and water, but manage to survive to be spit out somewhere back in Europe.
Verne focuses on the science of the day with evolving theories about the heated nature of the earth's core. There's also much scientific exploration (in Latin) with discoveries of extinct creatures and plants. Verne displays comprehensive knowledge of the extant science of his day and plays with theoretical controversies. (M. Kurilla)
