An Old Fashioned Girl, by Louisa May Alcott
First Edition, Second Printing, Second State (BAL 163)
Published by Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1870
With its noticable shelf-lean, this copy of An Old Fashioned Girl falls into the the category of "leaning towers of precious books". The book was published by Roberts Brothers in Boston, Louisa's original publisher of Little Women (1868) and appears to have reasonably appreciated life since then.
Its original maroon cloth cover is sun-faded on the spine, but the gold gilt embossed writing on the spine and cover remain bright and clearly legible.
Some wear and fraying to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine, and small amount of bumping to book board corners.
Internal binding is secure. Some cosmetic cracking and exposing of the hinges throughout not affecting binding.
Foxing on tissue guard between frontis illustrations. Overall, pages throughout are crisp and clean. Top corner of pages 307-322 have an ~1/4" dog ear bend where they appear to have been stored in the bent position. This section has been unbent and may settle with time, but it is noticeable on close inspection.
This is a well-loved treasure to pass on as a gift for any Louisa May Alcott collector.
