EXCURSIONS
by Henry David Thoreau
First Edition/First Printing
Boston: Ticknor and Fields. 1863
Edited by Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of 1,558 copies printed [BAL 20111]
12mo. Bound in publisher's original green-blue cloth covered boards.
Condition Notes: Good Condition. A solid copy that would be Very Good condition save for the following:
The back and front covers are in near fine condition. Shelf-wear to the top of the spine with some peeling of the cloth, particularly at the top joint of the back cover. ~1/2” lifting of green cloth there with exposure of paper below. Small chip at edge of spine. The gilt writing on the spine is slightly rubbed with some light loss over “ur” in Excursions. Nonetheless, the gilt writing remains nicely readable.
On the bottom of the closed pages there is a brown stain mark that carries through most of the book’s closed bottom pages. Inside, this brown mark noticeably extends from the title page into the first few pages including the bottom corner of the title page. Appears similar to a burn mark.
Starting at page 227, there is a stain forming a border around the pages and becoming more pronounced through to the back of the book.
Despite these stains, the pages are crisp and free of warping or odors.
The binding is good and tight with some cosmetic cracking exposing the hinges in various places throughout.
