Lorenzo Niles Fowler (1811-96) was the leading American phrenologist. Working with his brother, Fowler promoted phrenology into a popular craze and traveled the country giving lectures and performing cranial readings.

Similar lectures were held in Concord and Boston, Massacusetts, and attended by Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
