Beautifully illustrated 5 Volumes set of the Works of Goethe, illustrated by the best German Artists.
Published in 1885 by George Barrie, Philadelphia, New York & Boston
The books include many wonderful full page illustrations as well as and hundreds of illustrations in the text.
The contents include Goethe's Poems, Faust 1 and 2, Egmont, Natural Daughter, Sorrows of Young Werther, Goetz von Berlichingen, Iphigenia in Tauris, Targuato Tasso, Recreation of the German Emigrants, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, William Meister's Travels, and Elective Affinities.
Half leather light brown/gold binding with marbled covers and endpapers. The spines have five raised bands with titles and decorations in gilt. The titles are legible but faint. There is a small library identifier sticker on the bottom of each spine and a set of library rules pasted onto the insides of the front covers. The set previously belonged to the Sugar City Library Association, whose rules included a 2 cents a day fine for overdue books.
The volumes are generally in very good condition. There is slight scuffing to the tops of some volumes and on the spines, along with some discoloration on the spines.
These oversized volumes are each approximately 11.75 inches tall and 8.5 deep.
