General George B. McClellan
“The Regular Army of the United States”
Nicknamed “The Young Napoleon”, McClellan was the General-in-Chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was replaced in March 1862 by President Lincoln who, shortly thereafter, called McClellan back into action as his service was needed. McClellan led forces at the Battle of Antietam but the battle’s high casualties and effective stalemate led Lincoln to once again remove McClellan from command in November of 1862.
Two years later, McClellan ran an unsuccessful Presidential campaign against Lincoln.
In 1872, McClellan became President of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad.
His piece in this 1877 collection of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine was published a year before McClellan became Governor of New Jersey in 1878.
