In May of 1849, the publisher Ticknor, Reed, and Fields completed printing 5,100 copies of the First Edition of Longfellow s KAVANAGH. Part way through the first printing, errors were noted in the text and adjustments were made to the first edition printing plates to correct the words. Copies with the corrected words are called the First Edition, First Printing, Altered State .
Ticknor, Reed, and Fields missed one other spelling error which remains on page 172, line 11, where the word would is printed as wonld . Two sets of advertisements were printed to accompany the book. This book contains advertisements set B. (BAL 12096)
Condition: Very Good. Some shelf wear at bottom and top of spine with rubbing to gilt over publisher name at the bottom of the spine. Gilt title on spine remains crips, bright and readable. Several lighter spots on both the front and back covers. Moderate/Heavier foxing over front ads and first few pages. Remaining pages are crisp, clean with light foxing in places throughout. Heavy foxing on the last page, and moderate foxing on last endpage. Binding is very good.
