William Henry Furness was a clergyman, theologian, Transcendentalist, abolitionist, and reformer. Furness and Emerson were classmates at Harvard.
This volume is a first edition from a limited run. Bibliographies state that 780 copies were printed, however, this volume states that 750 copies were published, of which this is #4. Hardcover in brown cloth with the title in gilt on the spine and the year 1910. Pages untrimmed and a few pages uncut. 17 page introduction with 195 pages of text, including an index. Does not include the original slipcase. (BAL 5322) Some scuffing to color on bottom of back cover and along the spine; a white mark, approximately two inches, on spine.
Inside the front cover is a bookplate from Harvard Li that states "from the books in the homestead of Sarah Orne Jewett at South Berwick, Maine, bequeathed by Theodore Jewett Eastman, 1931." The copyright page incudes two stamps, approximately 1.5 inches long together, from Harvard, one noting the collection and one noting that the release of the book.
