The Works of Charles Sumner

15 Vol. Complete Set published by Lee and Shepard, Boston. (1870-1883)

Signed in Volume I by Senator Charles Sumner

Special Subscribers edition.

8vo.  8" x 6". Three quarter leather with marbled cover boards and matching marbled endpapers.

Each volume contains the bookplate of George W. Morse, possibly the Maine-born George W. Morse (1830-1915), member of the Washington State House of Representatives.   The Morse family crest motto on the bookplate ("In Deo non armis fido") translates to "In God we trust, not weapons."

Fair/Good Condition

Reflective of Sumner's life lived with great purpose and extreme moments, this signed set of The Works of Charles Sumner is resiliently bound but shows signs of wear particularly on the spines where there is a variety of cosmetic loss of some parts of the labels, leather, or significant wear to the edges and joints. Inside, the bindings are good and tight, and the pages are crisp and clean with minimal foxing.
