Walden by Henry David Thoreau

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company. 2 volumes, xliii, 1-259; vi, 261-522 p. With an introduction by Bradford Torrey, photogravuers chiefly by A.W. Hosmer, and an index. Walter Harding describes this edition as "'The Holiday Edition' although not labeled as such on the individual copies." Hardcover, two volume set, (7 3/8 x 4 3/4 in). Once green (now faded to a light green/brown) cloth boards are embossed with gold gilt leaf design by Sarah Wyman Whitman, Both volumes illustrated with photogravures, engravings and a survey of Walden Pond. Condition: Volume I: Green cloth binding is sunfaded to a light green/brown. More prounced fading on front and spine. Binding is Very Good; plates and front tissue guard are present and pages are clean and crisp. There is a small tear on the edge of the plate image following page 20. Cosmetic over top 1/3 of rear cover joint with some exposing of hinge. Volume II: Green cloth binding is sunfaded to a light green/brown. More prounced fading on front and spine. Binding is Fair/Good with some cracking and beginning of hinge exposure particularly near the middle of the volume. Large dampstain visible throughout entire book, seemingly originating at the spine and spreading outwards in various patterns throughout the book's pages. This stain appears to be from a long-ago incident; there is no must or other odor.
