First English Edition
WALDEN, by Henry David Thoreauwith an Introduction by Will H. Dircks.
published by Walter Scott, London. 1886.
16mo. Hardcover. Blue cloth covered boards with pasted on label on the spine.
Fair/Good condition. Closer to Good condition with these noted flaws:
The paper label on the spine is worn with some loss to the paper including a circular section in the middle of the label (please see photos). The “h” and “r” in the word Thoreau are worn off, as is the “6” in the year 1886. Scuff mark on the spine below the label, and scuffing along the top of the front and back cover joints with the spine. Moderate bumping to book board corners with small exposure of board corners, particularly on the top corner of the front cover.
Inside, a large number “6” has been written on the front end paper. -1” closed tear at the top of the half-title page above the word “Camelot”. Small indent on the fore edge of the front cover, perhaps from an overeager thumb pressing down on the volume cover.
The binding is good with some cosmetic cracking and exposure of hinges, particularly in the middle of the volume at page 112 where the netting is exposed. A few spots of foxing throughout.
